everybody this is at the feet of harry reid in the senate right now to move on this, and he appeared this weekend with abc's george stephanopoulos. take a listen to his thoughts. >> how about restrictions on high capacity magazines for ammunition? >> i think that's something we definitely have to take a look at. >> take a look or vote for? >> let's see what it is. >> sir, in your opinion, do you think that right now the best approach is going to be agreement on both sides of the aisle on small steps and that small step being potential for universal background checks as opposed to talking about the assault style weapons ban and magazine clips? >> well, first, i want to give president obama high marks for continuing to make gun control a top priority of his administration, especially so early on. whenever you talk about gun-related issues, it gets my attention. i was a 16-year-old police cadet when i was in the police locker room one afternoon getting ready to go on my shift and a police officer's gun accidentally went off and the bullet went through my neck and severed my spinal cord.

as assault weapons, may be unrealistic. this is according to a reid aide. again, i get back to harry reid really being the key point person to be able to take through feinstein's newly introduced bill and any other type of measures that the president would like to see put through the senate first. do you think, though, that harry reid being a pro-gun democrat, is the best person to helm this through the senate side? >> you were just talking about members of the house and senate in a vacuum, some of that may be true but i believe the president's strategy is the right one by going right to the american people and making the case that we need universal background checks eliminating the loopholes at gun shows that don't require background checks, going to the american people, talking about an assault weapons ban and also banning high capacity magazines, in an effort to continue to raise awareness, i'm sure the president will talk about this in the state of the union and to help build momentum, i'm organizing an effort with my colleagues, asking members of congress and the house anyway, to giv

that harry reid and john boehner speak on a river basis. they try to speak once a week. there were conversations before recess about the possibility of all this. we don't know but perhaps there were discussions on the sidelines of the rosa parks statue unveiling yesterday. the house majority leader have been firm. the senate we'll -- we'll deal with it great otherwise, it does not look like there will be significant progress. we have to wait and see. the way it works, sometimes these conversations are ongoing. somebody is coming to the floor or a bill can be brought up and things can get moving again. we are in a wait and see mode. otherwise, we are waiting to see things go at the white house and whether lawmakers will jump in on friday or wait until next week. host: thank you for your time. ed o'keefe for the washington post. the "washington times" here is president obama and speaker boehner. never let it be said that president obama has failed to spend time with the begin leaders in seeking an alternative to budget cuts that will hit most federal departments on friday. on wednesd

at the beginning of the day we didn't think that harry reid would get any republican votes, and he's actually secured quite a few. >> actually not a surprise. not a surprise because most republicans will say a president has the right to choose his own nominees. they believe that so that when the president is from their party, that holds true. what happened here is that hagel's performance at his hearing and some of the questions that have come up, some of the unanswered questions, have dragged that out. there are two factions of republicans who have slowed this down. a group focused solely on hagel wanting more information and that includes the new texas senator ted cruz who has been particularly critical of hagel in raising questions about his ties to foreign groups that might have provided him some salary during the years sips he left the senate. that's been very harsh questioning. on the other hand, there was a small faction of mccain, graham, and ayotte, who wanted more information about benghazi. i just spoke to them, and they said they believe that taking the stand was very effective. t

and approve the senate nomination, harry reid said he'd like a full senate vote either wednesday or thursday. the armed services committee met this morning to look at the upcoming sequester. those automatic defense cuts set to happen march 1. and they heard from among others the chairman or the joint chiefs of the -- the chief of staff of the army, general ray odierno. >> the fiscal outlook, which the army faces in fiscal year threen and to my hodge -- 2013 and to my knowledge is dire and unprecedented. by the budget control act of 2011, the combination of the continuing resolution, a shortfall -- excuse me -- the -- a shortfall in overseas contingency operation funds for afghanistan and the sequester in fiscal year 2013 has resulted in a $17 billion to $18 billion shortfall to the army's operation and maintenance accounts. as well as an additional $6 billion cut to other programs. all of this will come in the remaining seven months of this year. the fiscal year 2013 fiscal situation will have grave and immediate readiness impacts by all forces not serving in afghanistan or forward in korea.

harry reid, eric cantor there. and members of congress. these are coveted seats. just saying before the president was introduced here, there has been all this advanced notice that the president will be sort of keeping with his confident, even arguably aggressive tone that he has taken since his reelection. the quote that stood out for me from politico this week, it was assigned to a person close to the drafting of the speech. >> right. >> said the president's approach to the republican party in this speech would be borrowed from the 2500-year-old chinese book philosophy "the art of war." and the quote was "build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across." . >> i like the quote. and i think that would be probably a good strategy for the president. i mean, i would hope that we don't see a lot of partisan bickering, but i hope he is aggressive in terms of the proposals that he is going to lay out. this being his last term, most people say 18 months and then you start looking lame duck. so very important speech as to what his presidency and his legacy is going to mean. and i think
